if required.
A glulam structured dining
room and commercial
kitchen boosted staff
facilities and supported a

Feasibility
study, Animal
Shelter, Vienna
Project comprised
initial feasibility studies
on two potential sites
to house and care for
over 1200 mixed
species small animals,
in order that they may
be re-homed. Design
then developed for
adoption and
adaptation by Vienna-
based Architects.
Concept clearly
defined separate public
and private areas and
utilised the site’s
orientation to shield
animals’ external areas
from prevailing winds
whilst using passive
ventilation and natural
daylight to internal
spaces
Commission also
included detailed
design proposals of
animal enclosures -
image shows typical
dog kennel, heated
‘sleep’ area to left and
covered but open to
fresh air ‘run’ to right.

Dog re-homing
centre, Dublin
Use of a portal frame and
horizontal metal cladding
provided a cost effective
design, whilst feature
rendering and circular
windows soften the
business park aesthetic.
The centre’s high quality
kennels feature
innovative electrically
operated ‘pop hatches’
(by Technik Technology)
for easy control of dogs
within their individual
pens - at a press of a
button, dogs can be let
out from their underfloor
heated ‘sleep’ areas to
their own covered
external ‘run’.

EnSen Design’s principal architect has substantial experience with healthcare
projects, both for people and large or small animals, where the finishing details
are as critical as the initial space planning. Principles of air pressurisation,
hygiene, resilient finishes, and careful integration of highly serviced specialist
equipment, have been mastered from small veterinary projects, private hospital
extensions, and animal welfare re-homing centres. We work closely with
individual healthcare and welfare professionals to provide tailored solutions.
